The concept behind the shoot:
When I saw this dress, the gears in my head started turning. This is a hell of a dress, so flowy and light, it definitely gave me "otherworldly" vibes. I knew I wanted to create some sort of character to photograph in this dress, a mythical creature who lived in the water; perhaps not exactly a mermaid, but more like a water spirit. So, I showed @fernweh.collections the dress and we began the planning.
We knew we wanted a location near the water and also with large rocks, which is sometimes difficult to find in the DMV. After much researching, we found a park off the side of the Potomic River, however, when we arrived we quickly realized the water was unaccesible due to large cliffs. We decided to take a chance and head to a more well known location, Great Falls Park. We orginally hadn't wanted to go here due to it being a high trafficked area, but luckily when we arrived there was barely anyone there.
We shot in a foresty area with a shallow pond and creek. We liked the idea of these photos showing the mythical creature looking like she was haunting the forest and had been caught on camera. The colors and design of the dress also make it look like the model is floating at times, or made of water. We also gave the model aquatic looking prostetic ears and made the model's hair wet to further give her the "just came out of the water" look.
Just as we were about to move from the area, we spoted some giant rocks near the the actual Potomic River. This was exactly what we had been looking for and we shot for the rest of the time at that spot.
Overall, we were extremly blown away by how the shots turned out and were super happy how everything came together! The shots give off a dark, haunting feeling. Hope you all enjoy this set as much as we do.
My friend Kaitlyn (IG: fernweh.collections) and I collaborated on a recent water spirit-inspired concept photoshoot. I had found a beautiful flowy dress from Blackmilk that resembled water and thought it would be perfect to use in a photoshoot. We came up with the details and here was the result!
